Asking is a big deal for a lot of women.
And when I say big deal, I mean, a lot of women abhor asking for what they want. I note that If a woman has difficulty asking for what she wants, she will most certainly struggle with receiving.
If you are a woman who struggles with asking and/or receiving, if you are a woman who considers yourself a "giver" but you don't like to take from others or if you are a woman who is chronically underpaid or you don't have enough work coming to you...
Self-responsibility is powerful medicine.
At the same time, the general insistence (especially in the spiritual, healing, and personal development realm) that personal challenge = being stuck in a story is frankly, complete bullshit. It draws the attention away from what is truly being offered to you via your experience and instead, adds insult to injury via the subtle judgement that you are “stuck in a story”.
Seriously, though — isn’t it interesting that we never...
This is the second post in a series of posts about my experience being diagnosed, and treated for, melanoma. Did you miss the first post?
Baggage, History and Beliefs
A few years ago I took my daughter, Clara, on a month-long road trip across the western United States. When we got to Yellowstone, there were people lined up to rent bear spray.
Bear spray. Huh.
Here is what I thought, “I trust the bears more than I trust you. I know what to expect from wild animals. You...
This is a love story.
More than ever, I know that my story has never been anything but a love story.
Talking about illness and past hurts is tricky territory — the human inclination is to look away or create distance, “Oh poor her, that is tragic.” Please save that kind of pity for something else. Because this story, my story, is every woman’s story to some degree.
I’ve never met a woman who doesn’t suffer at least a little bit in the present moment from...
Dear beautiful you.
This is dedicated to my daughter. To your daughter. To all the daughters. To all the women who are in the lives of younger women. To all of us who are raising our voices for a deeper, wider and truer conversation that opens up a different world. I dedicate this to you.
I've been grappling. Grappling with the imperative to "be what you speak and speak what you be", as my wise friend KJ said to me. As the kid who was scorned as the town crier, I've always been a person for...
How long have you known?
You were born knowing your Truth. You knew that then, before you were told otherwise. And of course, you know that now, but at some point, you may have started walking it back, hiding it away, or even dismissing or diminishing what you know to be true for all the right reasons.
Maybe you wanted to fit in, or not get in trouble, or perhaps you noticed that the people around you didn't understand or, that there was no context in which you could understand the Truth of...
I am barely settled.
One day up, one day down, most days sideways. A transcontinental move of epic proportions from Colorado to Zambia. I'm in it. I'm in the fire, facing the challenge of overwhelming change. This missive is for me as much as it is for you. A smoke signal rising from the ashes for those of us who are walking through the fire of challenge.
As I take one step and then the next through the fires of change, I'm reminded that there is a particular set of circumstances...
I've been thinking a lot about addiction and recovery as I've been winding down my work in preparation for our move, and feeling all the feels about all of it. Because I'm recognizing the clear signs of withdrawal from work. From WORK for crying out loud. It's been like falling down the rabbit hole in Alice in Wonderland -- I keep thinking I'm going to get to the bottom but I keep falling, my past rushing by, offering me greater wisdom and healing around the gift of addiction and the call to...
You know how it is.
Something hurts. You feel unmotivated, unsure of your next move, you feel like people aren't hiring you when they should hire you, your kids are acting up, you aren't making enough money, your partner isn't being supportive, your parents are sick, the work of being a business owner feels like it is beyond your capacity.
Sometimes one little pain point, sometimes lots all at once.
We rail at the universe for making it so hard. We take it personally. We...
My truce with fear and anger was tenuous at best.
Though I spend hours with clients, helping them ease into feeling their feelings and feel them in their bodies, it has always been with the understanding that we want to get our emotions to "go away" so we can get un-stuck and make better decisions. That feelings must be felt (as annoying and inconvenient as that may be), but then we can move on to something better than the pesky feeling-state.
I was preparing for something that...
