“The spiritual journey does not consist in arriving at a new destination where a person gains what he did not have, or becomes what he is not. It consists in the dissipation of one’s own ignorance concerning one’s self and life, and the gradual growth of that understanding which begins the spiritual awakening. The finding of God is a coming to one’s self.”
It takes a lot more effort to stay the same than it does to change, once you get started.
Whether we cling to the past for dear life (oh, I know that one well!) or skip toward the future with open arms (HA!) - it's scary and there is often some discomfort involved. Stretching can be like that. When we are exploring - and expanding - the limits of what we think we can do, or who we are, it may feel like a good idea to go back to the old limits and just hang out where it's cozy.
But that doesn't really work.
Once you start expanding your limits it's hard to go back.
We are built for this work of remembering that we are whole and once we begin, it's physics, right? A body in motion stays in motion... It becomes like a regular yoga or movement practice - you start to feel stagnant and stiff if you aren't shedding the old and expanding into the new. Once I realized that, somehow, it made the scary stretching bits a bit easier. I stopped clinging to my comfort zone, kicking and screaming... these days, sometimes, I can welcome new cycles of evolution and change.
I said sometimes, yoginis.
As you evolve, so does your business.
Healing and change have been abundant for me over the last few years and I began to notice a change in my coaching practice. I noticed that I was (and am) helping people heal the deeper sticking points that surround their business - the undercurrent of old energy, feelings, patterns and beliefs that stop people from being successful doing the work they are called to do. I started bringing up the deeper stuff with my clients and eventually, I stopped doing site builds (only after getting wicked carpel tunnel - I got the memo after that.) I started incorporating yoga into sessions when people's bodies were locked up with old, unprocessed stuckness. Recently, I have started bringing energy work into client sessions to help people move into what they want with way more ease.
I tip-toed my way into a much bigger and scarier place of calling myself a healer. Evolution. I wonder what will come next?
Here's the thing. The plan is important, the structure is important, the strategy is important and I love how that work really helps people move out on their ideas - but, I've found that the response that people have to the challenges and experiences of being a business owner is far more important to pay attention to.
Business IS a spiritual and deeply transformational practice - for the business owner and for the people they are here to serve. This deep work that we do for ourselves is ultimately in great service to our clients and clears the way for success.
As a healer, helper, coach or teacher - self-actualization is the real work.
Without facing your own stuckness and fear-laced bits, it's hard to help others as effectively as you might want to. When you take responsibility for your own growth and healing, you are able to compassionately make space for others to do the same work. This is a huge win-win: you benefit and your clients benefit. Everyone is happier and more enlightened at the end of the day.
Your people need you to embrace this evolution.
You don't have to know who you will be or what you will offer for the next 10 years. It's going to shift and change and morph as you do.
It is enough to be exactly who you are in the moment, showing up 100% for your life and your business, while celebrating that you are on the way to being more of who you really are. Don't underestimate the unbelievable power of simply being you, evolving, yogini-style.
Namasté to you, business yoginis!
