Where are you?


Yoga is a call to awareness.

Awareness of what is happening in our bodies and our minds, right now, without judgment.  Yoginis typically welcome this kind of connection with their bodies, their minds, and their breath.  Most can see the benefit of bringing this kind of attention to their relationships with themselves and with others.

Running a business is a call to awareness as well.

When it comes to the relationship with their business, however, I often find these amazing, gifted women would rather poke their eyes out than bring this kind of care and attention to their business.  To their clients -- yes.  To the business of their business? No way.  There are all kinds of reasons for this...

"I'm just not good at business stuff."

"I hate numbers -- they give me hives."

"Spiritual people don't worry about income."

"I prefer to be spontaneous-- planning isn't my thing."

I have met business yoginis that can work this way for a while (in fact, I did when I first started teaching yoga!)  But they often confide that they would like to reach more people with their work and they can't seem to make it happen.  They feel scattered, unproductive, and anxious about the work they are doing because they fundamentally don't feel like they have a handle on what they are doing.  They are resisting the work of creating a strong foundation for their business.

Creating a strong foundation first requires an understanding of where you are.

By knowing where you stand in your business, right now, you can determine with greater clarity how to get where you want to go and what it will take to get there.

As you turn your attention towards your vision and intention for your business in 2011, I encourage you to compassionately and honestly assess the previous year (which I talked about last week) and then, assess where you are, right now, in your business.

  • How many clients do I have?
  • How many group programs and/or products am I offering?
  • Do I have a business plan?  Do I use it?  Does it need to be updated?
  • What is my average monthly income from my work? Expenses?
  • How many people am I in touch with, through my newsletter?
  • What is missing from my business that is preventing me from growing?
  • What is stopping me (internally) from moving forward?
  • Are there other factors that need to be taken into account?

When you look at where you are with honesty and an open-heart, it stops fear and anxiety in their tracks.

The stories that our minds make up about what is happening are usually far worse than the reality.  When we know where we are, it is MUCH easier to create a plan that will be truly supportive for you and the growth of your business.  It creates clarity and focus.  You will know what actions you need to take to truly be in service to your people and yourself in 2011.

Thank you for reminding us that you must concentrate on you and where you are emotionally, physically, and in a business aspect in order to continue down your journey. Facing yourself, often times can be the most challenging part of facing reality. However, it is necessary and beneficial.
