Know Your No

Manifestos make my heart sing.

Mantras and affirmations are sexy, beautiful, and inspiring.  I always feel like angels are singing a chorus in the background when I read a manifesto that cuts to the heart of the matter.

Our YES statements are expansive and have a quality of never-ending possibility.  But no allows us to draw the line in the sand and tell the world (and ourselves) exactly what we will NOT do.

There is something about the power of a NO.

When we long to be of service and when we want to be profitable doing it, it is almost painful to say no, isn't it? When we love our family, when we are natural care-givers, it is easy to be the go-to person for every problem. The wrong opportunities keep being presented, your heart sinks, every fiber of your being dies a little when you say yes to the things that you don't want to be doing.

The universe is kindly asking you if you really want what you say you want.

It's hard to make the jump, the leap of faith.  What if, what if, what if.... no one will hire me to do this thing I love to do?  What if it's not really valuable?  What if I make an ass of myself?  What if people want me to do things differently or make a different offer? What if my family gets mad?? It's so easy to become paralyzed in a state of fearful resistance where there is no work or we are doing things we really don't want to do.

No is about drawing a line in the sand.

To do the inspired work, we have to say no to the mediocre work.  We might be good at one thing, but incredible at the other.  We might have time in the afternoon to take clients, but we really want to set that time aside for our family.  We might pack our schedules tight to stay busy, but we really want to have a daily yoga practice to help us be more focused with a lighter load of clients.

You must say no to get to the HELL YES in your life.

Saying no tells the Universe that you mean business.

Draw your line in the sand with a clear and present no so you can say yes to the parts that you really, really want.  You are going to love how good it feels.  And, yoginis, you are going to feel even better when you just smile and say, "No, thanks" to your NO's so you can say HELL YES to the things that really make your heart and soul sing.

So let's hear it, loud and proud. What will you absolutely not do? Make a list and JUST DON'T DO IT.

Namasté to you, business yoginis!

Thank you so much for this - I really needed to read it today as I've been debating with myself over doing a seminar that could lead to great things...but could blow up in my face. My gut's been telling me to say "no"...and now I'm off to do it!

Nona, I was just writing a question for Michael Port addressing the very same issue because I stand for this idea, but then I have other "mentors" tell me "take it, you don't know where it'll lead." That usually guilts me into taking something on that I don't want to take on.

I needed the reminder.

Well put!

xo, Dana

LOVE this Nona! So true. So powerful. As hard as it is sometimes to set the boundaries and say the 'no' you want to say, having the HELL YES ahead of you is so motivating to make those baby steps and the testing and trying of the 'no' changes. Seriously brilliant! Hxox

Just the other day I told the editor of Custom Publications at our local newspaper that I would no longer accept certain freelance assignments...assignments like boring filler- type stuff that, on one hand is "easy," but soul-sucking on the other (not to mention the time they take)! It feels good not to be a desperate freelancer who takes every little job that comes along!

Dana,That is such a fear-based response. There may be times when it would lead to something good -- and, you get to check in with yourself and see if it's a good fit, right??

Big love to you!!!

I love the HELL YES feeling -- but for me, I need to lay out the nos before I can even make space for the yes. Loving how you are saying no to get to yes... XO.n
