The lion's share of the obstacles you face are internal.
After spending years in corporate accounting and becoming a CPA - I still ended up ashamed and in financial disaster in my twenties. Even after digging myself out of financial disaster and knowing that I have a ton of hard-won skills and wisdom in and around business and finance - I still bumped up against deep fears, doubts and resistance when I started my venture.
What was truly at the heart of the business challenges I have faced had NOTHING to do with my skills or abilities. It was all internal.
In other words, the internal "glass ceiling".
The real obstacles to creating what you want for your business (and your life) are fear, resistance, and the unconscious actions that are driven by beliefs that we can't even really see (what I call legacy beliefs - they are so old and ingrained in us).
The internal glass ceiling is unique to each person, and can show up in so many ways.
What about the persistent and multifaceted belief that you will never, ever be enough - so you keep apologetically undercharging for your services. Or you experience the clenched fear that there will never be enough money, or clients, or well, anything - and that makes you feel graspy and desperate and seems to repel just the clients you want to work with. Or perhaps you just cannot bring yourself to look at your finances - every fiber of your being resists looking at what is true in this moment.
Then there are the myriad "what the hell was I thinking" actions.
The heart-breaking kind that indicate a glass ceiling is at work - such as the frustrating self-sabotage of any financial gains by overspending - which leaves you with the distinct feeling that you will forever suck with finances - that numbers just "aren't your thing". Or a chronic state of giving away your services for free or failing to take the opportunity to talk about what you do when someone asks. The actions that sabotage keep you and your business small-ish as a sort of energetic apology for wanting to be your best - to own your awesome.
Getting past the glass ceiling is essential.
I have experienced ALL of this and really, it's painful to even read, isn't it? When you step back and take it in - can you imagine how very difficult it would be to create success under those internal circumstances?
To make your true desires a reality, it is critical to move beyond the self-imposed glass ceiling of fear, self-doubt, self-sabotage, resistance and apologizing - however that shows up for you in your unique circumstance. Getting past your internal glass ceiling will allow you to (re)claim your power and take your place as the master of your money, your worth and the fate of your business.
And it's totally do-able. It just has to be DONE.
Start with unwinding your legacy beliefs - those beliefs that seem like rock-solid truth to you. Take them all out, and question them. Decide which ones stay, which ones go. Be deliberate and be intentional. Do the work to root out these legacy beliefs- these are the beliefs that drive unconscious action and keep us in the same old patterns. The bulk of your internal glass ceiling can be found here.
Define a new legacy - what do you truly desire? To get where you want to go, you have to know where you are going. Having a vision for your success will propel you and keep you going... What is it that you truly want to create in your business - what kind of life do you want your business to support? It makes it MUCH easier to get where you want to go when you know where that is.
Cultivate new beliefs of abundance and prosperity. Focus on what is right in your world. Pay attention to the goodness and the things you love. Practice gratitude without fail. Notice what elements of your true desires are already here. This is not about being polly-anna-ish. This is about seeing where things are really good, right now. This has the almost magical effect of multiplying the goodness.
Look at your money and your finances. If you are someone who resists looking at the money or knows a lot, but doesn't act on it - this is about getting current. Take a compassionate approach with yourself - grab someone as a guide and witness to hold your hand. How much debt do you have? How much cash is flowing in and out of your business and how do you feel about it? How does all of this line up with what you truly desire? Look at what is going right and what could be better - be honest. And stay curious + compassionate.
Stay current and transparent - If you've done the previous steps - you are ready to do this!! With your pricing, with your finances and with your big vision, that is. Have the tough conversations with your significant other about where you are, define the role that wealth and money play in your true business + life desires and map it out. Will your current business model get you there? What about your five year intentions for your business? How can you stay connected to your financial reality in a way that keeps your finances lined up with your true desires?
Facing your internal glass ceiling is the most astute (and loving) business move you can make.
By moving beyond your internal limits, you can fully own your awesome nature and create the business of your dreams. You are able to serve the people you are here to help. And you are able to create the life that you came to create. It's truly a success on all levels.
Namaste, business yoginis.
