When Things Fall Apart (in your business, that is)

Are you ignoring the foundation of your business?

I hear this a lot.  "Well, I only have three clients, so I don't really need... a shopping cart or paypal or an online scheduler or a newsletter or whatever it may be.

Here is what happens, though.  When we fail to create a business foundation that we can grow into, one of two things will happen: 1. Our business won't grow or 2. Things will fall apart in short order and you won't be able to support your clients the way you would like to.

This is a big part of what I teach and coach my clients around, so I hate it love it when I have an opportunity to take my own advice.

A Tale of Things Falling Apart

About six months ago, I started losing phone numbers for clients.  I would have to spend 20 - 30 minutes before appointments desperately looking for phone numbers.  I would feel frazzled by the time I got on the call and felt just slightly fraudulent.

The funny thing about it was, I didn't do anything about it for a few months.  It got worse, and worse... until one day, I didn't have a number and had to contact a client via email a few minutes after our appointment should have begun, apologizing and asking for her phone number.

Not. Pretty.

My system at the time worked for my clients and my business for where I was at, however, it was not a system that I could easily scale (keeping information in my head just doesn't work for the number of people I work with now-- go figure?). I needed a way to keep information about current clients. (Consequently, I settled on Batchblue, in case you were wondering.)

I hadn't been thinking 3 or 4 steps ahead, as I teach my clients to do.

I went back to the drawing board and revisited all of my systems and processes.  Not from a "I should have these just because..." but asking the all-important question, "What will I want to have in place if I reach my targets in the coming year (you have targets, right??)?  Will my systems be able to support my clients, my business, and my sanity??"

Knowing where you want to take your business and creating systems that will support the business you INTEND to have sends a powerful message to the Universe and to the people you want to serve.

The message is that you are OPEN and READY for business, you know the POWER of what you have to offer, and you are GOING TO do what it takes to share your gifts with the World.

Look around your business.  Don't wait until things fall apart -- look forward with clear eyes and create the foundation of systems and support that will help you reach the people who need your wisdom, compassion, and talents.
