Define your "why" (and get more done)

A key to being who you want to be is doing only what you really want to do.

You might be thinking that would be totally unrealistic in your circumstances. Or that it might be construed as, err, selfish.

Don't get me wrong.  This doesn't mean tossing everything to the wind that you dislike doing and eating cupcakes all day.  This means connecting with the greater "why" behind your actions.

One of the great challenges of the people I work with is getting stuff done and staying on track.  I hear a lot of "should" and "have to" and not a lot of "want to".  Be it blogging every week, getting started with social media, or eating vegetables-- there is a lot of heavy, negative energy hanging around the tasks we "should" or "have to" do.

However, behind every task that feels like a poke in the eye, there is (usually) a greater desire -- the big "why".

It goes something like this...

  • Even if social media freaks you out to the core, you want to explore ways to connect with a wider audience.  So even if it's uncomfortable, if you are connected to your greater "why", you really want to give twitter chance.
  • Even if you get writers block every time you sit down to write a blog post, you want to connect more intimately with your right people, so you really do want to write. (Laurie Foley wrote an excellent post last week on keeping your blog active -- don't miss it!)
  • Even if you really prefer cupcakes to vegetables, you want to be healthy and have lots of energy as you meet the day-to-day challenge and triumph of entrepreneurship.  Therefore, you want to say no to the cupcakes and yes to the green smoothies.

Keeping your focus on the greater why of what you are doing makes it far easier to embrace the task at hand, even if it's not your favorite thing.

But what about the stuff that we just have to do, where there isn't a greater desire behind it?  Stuff we do only out of obligation??  Here's the scoop: "No thank you." is your friend.  If there isn't a greater want behind the task, I encourage you to drop it from your life as soon as humanly possible while still maintaining your integrity.

Focusing on your "why", and shifting into "I want" is a powerful choice

When you can focus on the greater "why's" in your life, it completely changes your energy.  It takes you out of "have to" and "should" (which activates the anxious brain) and plugs you into "want".  This simple shift helps you ground into calm and focused energy.  Which is much more conducive to true productivity.
